Thanks to all who came out to celebrate the kickoff of #aaiff14. Tonight’s event reminded me of how I got involved with AAIFF: It was the summer of 2009. It was my second summer off from college and I had trouble looking for internships in the city. Thankfully, I found AALDEF and had the opportunity to intern for the Language Assistance Project. I was 20. I was bored. I was on Facebook. I saw my co-worker’s RSVP for the AAIFF launch party at BLVD on Bowery. I wanted to go. Let’s party!! I emailed the staff to see if I can go. They said no one under 21 allowed, but I can volunteer for the festival. Since all shifts were during evenings or on the weekend, I was like.. why not? I signed up for maybe 2-3 shifts, but I showed up almost everyday. Partially because I wanted something to do, but mostly because I’ve never seen anything like this, like a whole community of folks coming together to showcase Asian American stories in a big theatre.. with no stereotypes, AND where Asian Americans were playing lead characters. That year, I snuck into 5 films. I think it was one of the most unforgettable summer ever!!! But guess what, this year is gonna be unforgettable too! #AAIFF #nonprofit #community #REPRESENT

And just like that service is over. Learned a lot today about all the hard work it takes to run a food truck. #bigdsgrubtruck #foodtruck #hustle #nyc (at Italian Center of Stamford)
